If you’ve been enjoying the convenience of having a Google Nest to keep your home comfortable and efficient from just about anywhere, you might want to check what generation you’re using because changes are headed this way.
Google Nest is officially discontinuing support for first and second-generation Nest Learning thermostats as of October 25, 2025. This means that those older models will no longer work with the Google Nest or Google Home apps. And if you’ve been relying on app-based features like remote temperature control, scheduling, or integration with other smart devices, those are about to go away.
What This Change Means
There’s no need to panic; the thermostat itself will still function. You’ll still be able to adjust the temperature manually using the device on your wall. But the “smart” part? That’s disappearing. You won’t be able to:
- Adjust temperature remotely via smartphone or voice assistant
- Receive energy usage reports
- Set schedules from the app
- Use home/away auto settings
- Integrate with other smart devices
Basically, your Nest thermostat will revert to a regular thermostat, with none of the bells and whistles that make it “smart”.
What You Can Do
If you’re going to be affected by this change, you have options before the winter hits.
- Get A New Smart Thermostat Installed Before October
- To avoid not having smart features before next winter, call a professional thermostat installer like 128 Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric. 128’s base+ members have access to a full line of SmartHome products, including a 128’s smart thermostat. - 128’s smart thermostat is backed by Z-Wave, Wi-Fi technology, unlike the Google Nest’s thermostat, which connects to your home’s Wi-Fi.
- 128’s smart thermostat has the same functionality as the Google Nest with remote monitoring and scheduling, but with added features like heating and air conditioning alerts.
- Do Nothing (But Accept What You’re Losing)
- If you’re fine with adjusting your thermostat manually and don’t care about smart features, you can keep using your first or second-gen Nest thermostat as a basic thermostat. Just know that over time, it may become less efficient, future updates or fixes won’t be available, and the features that sold you on the device are no longer available to you.
Smart home technology is constantly changing, which is amazing! But unfortunately, that means some older thermostats just may not be able to keep up when the engineering doesn’t continue to update its software. If you’re going to be affected by this shift and want to explore new, similar options, the team at 128 is here to help.
