Town History

The history of Reading, MA, is vibrant as it spans back to when its first settlers arrived in 1630 from England. The town was officially founded on June 10th, 1644, with the name “Reading” deriving from Reading, England. Soon after the name was established, the town began to take off, launching its first church, public education, library, and town tavern.

Since its establishment, Reading has been a booming town. It had significant involvement in the American Revolutionary War and Civil War. After the wars, the town saw some manufacturing businesses step in to bring income and jobs to the town, which started with a tire company. In addition, Reading saw more people begin to settle in, which meant the needs of the town continue to grow into what it is today.
