The Why and When of Boston-Area Air-Conditioning Maintenance

Protect your investment and your wallet with a visit from 128 Plumbing’s A/C experts.

Recently, we received a call from a customer in Newton who read our great reviews and needed help with a home heating system. We dispatched one of our heating experts, who repaired the system quickly. The customer thanked our expert and said, “Well, I’ll see you in August when I get my A/C tuned up,” but as we explained, the best time to tune up your home cooling system isn’t when you think it might be.

But more important than when, is why: You want to take care of your investment. Air-conditioning units don’t function as efficiently as they should without regular maintenance, and that can increase your monthly utility bills. And most warranty agreements are void if air-conditioning systems aren’t regularly maintained.

The Department of Energy recommends regular filter changes and periodic cleaning of your air-conditioner coils and condensation drains. Maintenance tune-ups include tests for leaks and assurance your refrigerant level is adequate and its effluent appropriately captured; checks for duct leakage; air-flow measurements; and a check of your thermostats.

It’s important to maintain the individual parts of an air-conditioning system to prevent a cascade of problems. Compressors and fans can have a markedly shorter lifespan if filters and coils are not cleaned regularly. Improper refrigerant levels can impact the performance of your system. Faulty sensors or thermostats can cause your system to cycle improperly, again putting great stress on your AC unit. And if it goes haywire during a particularly hot stretch of weather, you run the risk of damage to flooring and even furniture. See – one faulty part can have a cascade of negative effects.

So, now for the when of the matter:

Summer in Massachusetts is just as busy for us as winter, because a lot of our customers don’t think about their home-cooling systems until it is hot and they have no way to cool their home. If you haven’t had your ductwork or the A/C in your home inspected or serviced lately, now is a great time to have our experts inspect the cooling systems in your home.

Why should you get your home cooling system in Newton inspected now? Reasons include:

Being prepared for hot weather
Once the weather turns warm, you want to be able to kick on the air conditioner in your home and have cool air come out. If your home A/C system isn’t working properly, it is much better to have it inspected and repaired now before hot weather hits.

Upgrade your home cooling system
How old is the cooling system in your home? If you have a unit that was manufactured before 2010, the R-22 refrigerant that your system uses is being phased out, which means you will be paying a lot more to keep your house cool.  Now is a great time to upgrade your home cooling system with a ductless air conditioning system from 128 Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric, because you can have increased energy efficiency, better air quality, zoned cooling and eliminate the need to clean your ductwork. We can install a ductless cooling system from Mitsubishi Electric with up to $2,750 in rebates and 0 percent financing from Mass Save for a limited time!
